Every actor desires that role of a lifetime, and to Lincoln it came in the form of a job for the US Government. Months earlier Lincoln had finished up a small theatre production of a war comedy where he played the general-in-chief and President Grant which he co-wrote. Reviews were abysmal as the nation was not ready to treat such a topic with humor, but Lincoln's portrayal was one of the rare bright spots by the handful who saw it. With concerns of another assassination of a sitting President the government needed someone to portray US Grant in order to thwart a particular plot they had uncovered. Lincoln's sparsely seen portrayal landed him job.
Encased in makeup and padding, Lincoln played the president to perfection flushing out the would-be assassins. How ironic that his most effective performance could never be advertised, and worse still the soundly panned production made him a pariah among most of the casting directors (made even worse when his temper contributed to a violent, nasty disagreement).
Dejected, discouraged and blackballed Lincoln could no longer find stage work and soon became forgotten among the cultural centers of the east. Bouncing around from odd job to odd job (even trying for a time to fight professionally) Lincoln was at the end of the line, until the government came calling again.
